Steering

The steering system allows the rider to control the direction of the motorcycle by turning the handlebars, which pivot the front wheel.

The steering head bearings should be inspected every 12,000 km (7,500 miles) or annually, whichever comes first, to ensure smooth steering and prevent wobble or play.

Signs of worn steering head bearings include a notchy feeling when turning the handlebars, wobble at low speeds, and play in the steering head.

To adjust the steering head bearings, loosen the top triple clamp bolts, adjust the steering stem nut to remove any play, and retighten the triple clamp bolts to the specified torque.

To replace the steering head bearings, remove the front wheel, forks, and handlebars. Remove the old bearings, clean the bearing races, install the new bearings, and reassemble the steering components.

Check for proper steering alignment by ensuring the front wheel is straight when the handlebars are centered. Use alignment marks or tools to verify the wheel and handlebars are properly aligned.

Inspect the steering damper for proper function by checking for smooth operation and resistance throughout its range of motion. Replace the damper if it shows signs of wear or leakage.

To lubricate the steering head bearings, remove the steering stem, clean the bearings and races, apply high-quality grease, and reassemble the steering components.

Maintaining proper steering tension is important for smooth and precise handling, preventing excessive wear on steering components, and ensuring rider safety.

Check for steering play by holding the front wheel between your legs and turning the handlebars. Any noticeable movement or play indicates the need for adjustment or bearing replacement.
